In the Church of St Oswald’s, Cranbrook, tragedy is marked by a simple plaque. It is placed in memory of a dear husband who died, aged 47 on November 3, 1917 and a dear son who died in France aged 21 on October 22, 1917.

The Easter Season in the Southern Hemisphere brings its own distinctiveness. The cooling of Autumn and the milder days can bring a settledness to life which in some ways parallels the days of waiting in Jerusalem.

A land of fire and flood

Dorothea Mackellar’s poem, ‘Core of My Heart’ was written in 1908 when as a young 19 year old Australian she found herself in the ‘alien landscape’ of England. In the second verse she writes one of the best known of all Australian verse:

Dear Friends,

As we commence a new Church year with the celebration of Advent 1 on Sunday, and Christmas just four weeks from now, I have been thinking of our Christian vocation to proclaim the joy and mystery of God's purpose and Jesus' birth.

Dear Friends,

This weekend I am in Gippsland, celebrating the installation of Bishop Kay Goldsworthy as the Bishop of Gippsland. It is a privilege and a delight to acknowledge Kay's appointment, and to represent the Diocese at an historic occasion. This will also mark the first time since 2010 that all our Australian Dioceses have had a Bishop in place.

A new Year, and time for Rest, Re-creation and Restoration

My dear friends,

Prayer for the world

It was good that we were able to make our churches available for prayers during our nation's day of mourning on August 7th. A number of people have written movingly of local connections between this region and the tragic loss of life on the other side of the world. There may be billions of human beings living on this fragile planet but the webs of inter-connection and global awareness make even distant events quite personal.

Dear Friends,

I have just returned from the gathering of members of the Anglican Church from across the Diocese in Adelaide for General Synod. Meeting together for important discussion (and warmth, as it was being rather cold in the city at this time of the year) Anglicans engaged in matters which will help set the direction of the church for (hopefully) a few decades

Dear Friends,

An essential expression of the Christian life of every Anglican parish and other ministry is the commitment to the Marks of the Mission of the Anglican Church. This formal statement of commitment to God’s creation has been developed from the consistent witness of Holy Scripture. Meeting human need with loving service is the hallmark of the Old Testament (as exemplified by Isaiah 58), as well as the New Testament (particularly in passages such as Jesus’ parable recorded in Matthew 25.)

My Dear Friends,

The latter days of Lent bring renewed focus on our journey to the Cross. Lent can begin as a discipline; an effort in self-denial and self-will, exercising a modestly varied rhythm to our daily lives. This is good and appropriate, but if this is all that happens in Lent our achievements are only that we have become a little healthier and a little less self-possessed.

Safe Church Workshops

What a wonderful response to our workshops! Across the Diocese around 350 people participated in a workshop, and gained an enormous amount from the materials presented by Peter Barnett.
